City of Muses

What does it take a city to be bold?

This was the question posed by the installation ‘City of Muses’ at the Biennale of Australian Art (BOAA). Featuring portraiture of living artists as muses demanding the city do better. The installation included an intimate cinema screening the film works of Luxville, happening in the dome tent, a twirling stage and banners of the elders of Luxville.

All under a ceiling of chandeliers.

Commissioned by BOAA and installed in St Andrews Hall, the work drew thousands of visitors over eight weeks.

“Like Alice through the looking glass – a new world emerges. I want to live in the City of Muses. A beautiful work of meaning and power.”

Elizabeth Lewis-Gray, punter
